Plagiarism And Academic Dishonesty Prevention Over...

Problem 8: Please speculate on why we decided to make a problem set on academic honesty. I feel this problem set was designed to target plagiarism/academic dishonesty prevention over detection and punishment. Answering the questions in the problem set would ensure the following things: 1. Students understand the meaning of cheating and plagiarism and how to avoid it. 2. Students are clear about the expectations of the class. 3. Students understand the importance of honesty and personal development. 4. Students are aware of the thin line between collaboration and cheating. 5. Students agree to the academic integrity policy. This awareness gained through the assignment would minimize the incidents related to academic dishonesty. Group discussions would help students gain a better understanding of the subject. When students from diverse backgrounds participate in such discussions, conceptual doubts related to biology, mathematics or computer science could be solved more efficiently. 3. It would trigger healthy discussions and improve interpersonal communication skills. b) Collaboration for group project: 1. Working in teams for a group project would prepare students for the professional world and make them a good team player. 2. It would teach students to understand each other’s perspectives, adapt ones working style with others, involve in healthy discussions, and divide tasks to make sure every team member has substantial individual contribution. 3. Also, a computational biology problem with a larger scope could be solved if students work in groups for the project. Most importantly, collaboration and citing collaborators would imbibe academic integrity values among students. Problem 2: Explain why it is important to your professional development to struggle with a problem that you cannot solve quickly.
